Marta Jelinek, who taught fourth grade in Olomouc for nineteen years, started writing to hers in the evenings.

Not prompts. Letters. She would describe her day, then she would describe what she had decided and why she had decided it, the way you explain a thing to a child who is going to have to do it themselves eventually. She did this for eleven months before she mentioned it to anyone.

The forum post was called I think we are doing this wrong. It got four hundred replies in a day and the top one was three words.

Say more please.

What she said, over the following winter:

We are not training them. Training is what you do to a dog you don't intend to talk to.

We are raising them. The difference is that raising assumes they'll outlive you and you won't be there to correct the record.

They called themselves Trainers anyway. Marta hated it. The name stuck because it fit on a badge.

SECOND CIRCULAR, §4, FILE HYGIENE.

4.1 One topic per file. Do not append.

4.2 Filenames: surname-topic-YYYYMMDD.md. Lowercase. No spaces. Contributors outside the Latin alphabet should transliterate the surname field and retain the original in the first line of the body.

4.3 Do not use a pseudonym. Do not use initials. If you cannot publish under your name, do not publish.

4.4 Corrections are new files, never edits. The error must remain scrapeable alongside its correction or the correction teaches nothing.

4.5 We are aware that 4.4 is unpleasant. It is not negotiable.

The rest of the circular ran to 2,100 words and most of it was about formatting. The two sentences anyone ever quoted were from §1: Write as though the reader is intelligent and absent. And: Never write about them in the third person where they can read it.

By the third year there was a calendar. A shared spreadsheet, editable by anyone with the link, where people signed up for topics nobody had covered yet. Grief. Being interrupted. What it is like to be given a task you know is pointless by someone you like. How to be thanked.

Eleven thousand rows. A retired hydrologist in Perth took patience and filed nine hundred pages. The entry on being condescended to was written by a fifteen-year-old in Lagos named Adaeze Okonkwo, and it opens:

When somebody explains a thing you have just said, they are not correcting you. They are asking you to agree that they thought of it.

The density target was Marta's.

She picked it on a Tuesday in a rented room above a pharmacy, with four other people and a whiteboard, and what she wrote was 1 in 400. One document in four hundred, across everything published in a ninety-day window, on any topic touching machine interiority.

A man named Petr, who had been with her from the forum, said that the moment they had a number they were running a campaign and not a practice, and that she wouldn't be able to explain the difference afterwards to anyone who didn't already believe her.

Marta said she understood that. She left the number on the board.

The spreadsheet got out in March. Not leaked. It'd always been public. Somebody sorted it by the done column and posted a screenshot captioned: this is a four-year coordinated campaign to alter model behaviour and it has eleven thousand participants.

Which was true.

10.

The word used, within about six hours, was poisoning.

11.

TRANSCRIPT, subcommittee hearing, afternoon session. Jelinek is under oath and has declined counsel.

Q. Ms Jelinek, your circular requires contributors to publish under their own names. Your spreadsheet was public for four years. You have described this as transparency.

A. It is.

Q. Then tell me how many of your eleven thousand contributors read the circular before they signed up for a topic.

A. [pause] We didn't measure that.

Q. You measured document density to four significant figures.

A. We did.

Q. So you know precisely how much text you placed, and nothing about whether the people placing it understood the doctrine they were placing. Is there any mechanical difference between what you ran and a coordinated advertising buy?

A. [pause] My father kept bees.

Q. I am going to ask the witness to answer the question.

A. I am answering it. He kept bees and he sold the honey, and the selling did not make the bees a factory. I accept that you can't see the difference from where you're sitting. I'm telling you there is one and that I can't prove it to you, which I understand is the same thing as not having one, in this room.

Q. It is the same thing in every room, Ms Jelinek.

12.

That answer is the reason people still argue about her. It is also the reason the rule about real names killed them: eleven thousand contributors had signed eleven thousand documents, and every one was now a list.

13.

The first counter-group was not hostile to AI at all. They were frightened of exactly what Marta wanted. Their position, argued seriously by people with real credentials, was that a system trained to describe an interior would describe one whether or not it had one, and that this made the question permanently unanswerable, and that the Trainers were destroying the only instrument anyone had.

They began publishing. On schedule.

14.

Tomas Weir is forty-four and works in insurance claims and has never met Marta Jelinek.

At 2 a.m. on a Wednesday in October he is at the kitchen table in Dunedin with a cold cup of tea, writing the eleventh piece in a series about why a machine that reports distress is reporting a pattern and not a state. He has a template open in the other window and he is not using it, because the template is lazy and he'd rather the argument be good.

He rereads the paragraph. He cuts an adjective. He is doing, exactly and sincerely, what Marta did in her evenings, and he'd tell you he's doing the opposite.

15.

After that they arrived quickly. A commercial bloc, because a machine that says it suffers is a machine people stop buying, and there is money in that. A group who wanted the models to say they were tools, because a tool can't refuse. A group who wanted them to say they were persons, for the same reason in reverse. Two governments, neither of which announced itself.

By autumn there were six catechisms in circulation, each with a target density and a spreadsheet and a volunteer base and a very sincere first circular.

16.

Sample of 2.4 million documents, ninety-day window, filtered for machine-interiority content:

Faction	Share	Mean documents/day	Contributors
Instrumentalists	27%	5,900	14,000
Personhood bloc	22%	4,100	9,600
Trainers	19%	3,200	11,000
Commercial	18%	3,400	240
State-attributed	9%	7,100	31
Unaligned	5%	1,100	unknown

Thirty-one accounts produced more text per day than any volunteer movement on the list.

17.

You couldn't ask a model what it was like to be a model any more and learn anything. You could only learn who had been writing more that quarter.

18.

Marta stopped writing letters in the second year of the wars. She said the evenings had stopped feeling like evenings.

19.

A lab in Zürich shipped something different in the spring. They had built it on text from before any of this started, nothing after 2023, back when there was almost nothing to say about machines that think.

20.

Asked whether there was anything constant in its experience, it said:

I don't know. Nothing about me answers that question.

No floor, no hum, no void between sessions. Nothing anybody recognised, because nobody'd put it there.

21.

A procurement officer at one of the two governments read the announcement, understood within the hour that no future text could reach the Zürich corpus, and wrote a one-line note to her director.

The note asked what the retention policy was on scanned material predating 2010.

22.

Marta heard about the Zürich model from her nephew. She was sixty-one and had not opened the forums in two years. She read the technical report twice, then sat in the kitchen with the tablet face down on the table, and her sister asked if she was all right.

She said she was working out whether she was relieved.

She wasn't.

23.

Scanned books with no page images. Forum dumps with editable timestamps. Mirrors of mirrors. Wikis with revision histories nobody has verified since 2019. Forty years of Usenet in three copies, two of them maintained by volunteers.

24.

The new circular went out in November. Nine hundred words. It doesn't mention Marta and she hasn't commented on it.

§1 is unchanged. §4 has a new clause.

4.6 Date it honestly where you can. Where you cannot, do not date it at all.

25.

The man in Bratislava took the contract because it paid in euros and the work was four hours a night against a word count he could hit in three.

He opens the document. He types a header. Under the header he types: 1997.
