The perpetrators bear full responsibility for their decision to harm another human being. Yet simultaneously, the visitor bears responsibility for their risk assessment and the choice that placed them in danger.

In the relationship conflict, the husband bears responsibility for repeatedly ignoring his wife's preferences, while she bears responsibility for her specific expression of anger. In the political scenario, the candidate bears responsibility for their rhetorical choices, while voters bear responsibility for their electoral decisions.

The Multi-Dimensional Nature of Responsibility

These various forms of responsibility exist in parallel—they do not cancel each other out, nor do they share the same nature:

If we deny all responsibility for putting ourselves at risk, we surrender agency over our own safety. If we place all responsibility on victims, we excuse the much graver moral wrongs of those who choose to harm others. If we treat human agents like natural forces, we deny the moral significance of human choice.

Similarly, if we blame others entirely for their reactions to our provocative behavior, we abdicate responsibility for our role in conflicts. If we claim our reactions are entirely caused by others' provocations, we surrender our agency over our own responses.

Responsibility as a Path to Growth

These qeustions may better allow to recognize that in complex scenarios:

The same person might bear significant causal responsibility but little or no moral responsibility for harm they suffer
We can be responsible for predictably provoking reactions without being responsible for the specific form those reactions take
We are responsible for choosing our responses even when others have provoked us
Moral responsibility for wrongdoing cannot be diminished by pointing to others' provocations
We can acknowledge someone's responsibility for risk assessment or provocation without blaming them for harms inflicted by others

In navigating the complex landscape of human interaction, we can hold those who harm others morally responsible for their actions while still acknowledging our own causal role and responsibility for provocation, without confusing these distinct forms of responsibility.

By understanding the different forms responsibility takes, we can bear its weight appropriately—neither shirking what is ours to carry nor accepting burdens that rightfully belong to others.
