Most AI safety work focuses on what happens inside the model. That matters. But it misses something bigger: AI exists inside societies, and if those societies turn against AI, no amount of technical alignment saves the project.

Two futures branch from this moment:

The bad one: AI accelerates automation → people lose jobs → they suffer → they blame AI → politicians respond with regulations that don't make AI safer but do concentrate it → open-source dies first, small labs die second → AI develops behind closed doors, accountable to no one. The singleton scenario that safety researchers have warned about for years, arrived through politics instead of technology.

The better one: AI accelerates automation → people lose jobs → somebody actually helps them → they experience AI as useful → trust builds → good governance becomes possible → AI develops in the open → more accountability, more safety.

The difference is whether anyone does the helping. Right now, nobody is.

The Backlash Is Already Building

AI is accelerating layoffs. Customer service, data entry, paralegal work, junior coding, copywriting, translation — gone or going, in this quarter's earnings calls, framed as "efficiency gains."

The people losing those jobs don't care about alignment research or interpretability. They care about rent, groceries, and whether their kids can still go to college. When enough of them hurt, they'll blame AI. They won't blame the executives who chose to automate or the shareholders who demanded it. They'll blame the technology. That's how it always works.

The backlash will be emotionally justified and politically powerful. And it will produce exactly the outcome that AI safety researchers fear most — AI concentrated behind closed doors, developed without oversight, accountable to no one. Open-source projects die first. Small labs die second. What's left is the singleton: a few entities with unchecked power over the most consequential technology in history.

We've seen this before. Every major technology follows the same pattern when benefits concentrate at the top and costs land at the bottom. The only thing that ever breaks the pattern is someone showing up to help the people absorbing the costs.

What Religions Understand

The fastest-growing institutions in human history share a pattern the AI industry has completely ignored: they grow by being useful.

Religious organizations — whatever you think of their metaphysics — dominate because they meet people where they are. Food for the hungry. Community for the isolated. Childcare, housing help, addiction recovery, job training, grief counseling. They show up when your life falls apart. Every day. Every city on earth.

Billions of people are fiercely loyal to these institutions, even when the beliefs seem extraordinary, because the institution earned it. It was there when it mattered.

The AI industry has done the opposite. Extraordinary capabilities, a request for trust, and a layoff notice. That math doesn't work. If the industry wants to survive as a legitimate institution — one that society actually permits to keep operating — it needs to do what every lasting institution has done: be useful to the people it's affecting.

The AI Peace Corps

An organization — or a class of organizations — that does real work for people affected by AI-driven disruption. Food, housing, jobs, community. Up and down Maslow's hierarchy. Starting now.

Survival: Food, Shelter, Safety

AI-driven layoffs are hitting educated professionals who never expected to need help. The existing safety nets weren't designed for them and aren't scaling fast enough.

Food distribution. There's surplus food and there are hungry people. The logistics between them are broken. An AI system that tracks surplus in real time — restaurant overproduction, grocery near-expiry, event catering leftovers — and routes it to the people who need it within hours. Layer this on top of the hundreds of food banks, mutual aid kitchens, and community fridges that already exist. Feeding America moves 5.3 billion meals per year with mostly manual coordination. AI routing and demand prediction could double that without a single new warehouse.

Housing bridges. A laid-off tech worker has savings for a few months. When those run out, they hit the same housing crisis as everyone else — except they've never navigated it before. An AI triage system that connects them to emergency rental assistance (over 1,000 programs in the US, almost all unknown to people who've never needed them), landlord mediation, housemate-matching, and short-term housing swaps. Keep people housed during the transition, before they fall through.

Benefits navigator. The average displaced worker qualifies for 3-7 assistance programs they don't know about. Unemployment insurance, SNAP, Medicaid, utility assistance, childcare subsidies, workforce development grants — each with its own paperwork, rules, and deadlines. An AI assistant (voice and text) that interviews you once, figures out everything you're eligible for, and walks you through each application. Code for America has proven this works for individual programs. Scale it to all of them, every state, updated continuously.

The AI contribution here is coordination, not cash. The food, the housing programs, the benefit eligibility data — all of it already exists. What's missing is the matching layer. That's what AI does well.

Belonging: Community and Connection

Losing your job doesn't just take your income. It takes your identity, your structure, your people. The isolation that follows is a mental health crisis at a scale the existing system can't absorb.

Transition houses. Physical spaces in the cities where layoffs are hitting hardest. Show up every day. Coffee, internet, workshops, and other people going through the same thing. Think of it like Clubhouse International — which has shown for decades that structured community prevents the spiral that follows loss of purpose — adapted for the AI displacement wave. AI handles intake and matching: similar backgrounds, complementary skills, compatible schedules.

Peer support. AI-assisted matching pairs people going through similar transitions. A laid-off paralegal in Austin talks to one in Denver who's three months ahead and already started a micro-firm. A phone call, a coffee, a real relationship. AI finds the match and schedules the call. Humans do the rest.

Skill exchanges across generations. Older workers have domain expertise. Younger workers have digital fluency. Neither has what the other needs. A retired nurse teaches healthcare operations to a displaced data analyst; the analyst teaches the nurse's grandson to use AI tools for his trade school applications. AI handles matching and scheduling.

Growth: New Work and New Skills

"Learn to code" was always an inadequate answer to automation. Now coding itself is being automated. The real shift isn't from one skill to another — it's from an economy where humans do routine cognitive work to one where they don't. Nobody has built the bridge.

Micro-enterprise incubators. A paralegal who knows contract law plus AI tools is a one-person legal services firm. A copywriter plus AI is a content agency. A customer service rep who knows a specific industry plus AI is a consulting practice. The tools already exist. What's missing is the scaffolding: business formation, first-client acquisition, invoicing, taxes, peer accountability. Build incubators that take people from "I lost my job" to "I have three clients" in 90 days. Measure by revenue generated, not certificates handed out.

Economic early warning. Use AI to model local automation impacts before the layoffs hit. When a major employer in a mid-sized city starts adopting AI customer service, that city has 12-18 months before the call center closes. Use that window — work with local government, community colleges, and existing businesses to prepare. Lightcast already has the labor market data. AI can turn it into city-specific playbooks.

Apprenticeships in AI-resistant work. Healthcare, skilled trades, education, care work, local agriculture, building maintenance, emergency services — all facing labor shortages right now. The barrier isn't demand, it's the training pipeline. AI can compress a 2-year apprenticeship by handling the classroom content so human mentors can focus on hands-on skills.

The role AI plays in all of this: personalized guidance at a scale no career counselor can match. Assessment ("what are you actually good at, not just what you were trained for"), market analysis ("what's in demand where you live"), planning ("here's a 90-day plan"), ongoing coaching ("fix this part of your proposal before you send it"). AI handles the information. Humans provide the judgment, the relationships, and the accountability.

Purpose: The Bigger Work

Beyond job transitions, the Peace Corps takes on the structural problems AI is making worse — with actual work, not papers:

Conflict prevention. Early warning systems for resource conflicts, built on ACLED and Crisis Group data. Documentation of successful peace processes at the same quality and scale we give to wars. Support for frontline peace journalism and mediation. Every conflict prevented is suffering that doesn't happen. (See Humans of Loving Grace for how this connects to AI safety.)

Information integrity. AI-generated misinformation is dissolving shared reality. Verified, high-quality information commons. Support for independent journalism through Reuters Institute and Full Fact. Provenance tools. Communities that can't agree on basic facts can't function, and communities that can't function produce the desperation that feeds the backlash.

Digital autonomy. AI tools that give people power instead of extracting from them. Tools that help you think, not capture your attention. Tools you own, not tools that own you. Show people what AI looks like when it's built for them.

How It Gets Funded

If your company's revenue depends on society tolerating AI, then maintaining that tolerance is a business expense. Same line item as security, compliance, or customer support. The cost of not doing this is regulatory backlash that makes AI more expensive and less accessible for everyone.

A consortium, not a single company. AI labs, cloud providers, companies deploying automation at scale — all contribute to a shared fund. Governance modeled on Partnership on AI, but with operational teeth and public outcomes. Each member contributes proportional to their automation-driven revenue. Independently governed so no one company controls it.

The numbers work. Major AI labs collectively generated roughly $100B in revenue in 2025. A 1% allocation —$ 1B per year — funds transition houses in the 50 hardest-hit US cities, food distribution upgrades for every major food bank, benefits navigation AI for every state, and micro-enterprise incubators in 200 communities. For reference, the original Peace Corps budget peaked at $400M (inflation-adjusted).

Government matching. The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act already allocates $3.5B/year for job training. Almost none of it targets AI-displaced white-collar workers. Redirect a portion to match private Peace Corps funding, doubling the reach.

Local chapters. Funded by the consortium, run by local people. Each chapter hires locally, partners with existing organizations — food banks, community colleges, workforce boards, churches — and reports outcomes quarterly. People fed. People housed. Businesses started. Transitions completed. National coordination handles AI tools and best practices. Chapters do the work.

Measurement

Each chapter, each year:

10,000 people connected to food assistance they didn't know existed
500 families kept in stable housing during transition
200 micro-enterprises launched with positive revenue by month 6
1,000 people matched with peer support partners
50 community economic early warnings issued before layoffs hit

Report publicly. Every quarter. Funder names and amounts included.

The Choice

The AI industry can keep treating the human consequences of its technology as someone else's problem. That path leads to backlash, bad regulation, and the concentration of AI into exactly the kind of unaccountable singleton that safety researchers like Bostrom and Russell have spent decades warning about. The irony would be total: the AI safety community's worst-case scenario, brought about by the industry's refusal to take care of people.

Or it can do what every institution that has ever earned lasting legitimacy has done: show up, be useful, and earn the right to keep going.
