Democratic nations (handicapped themselves)
Humanity (concentrated AI power in worst hands)

The doomers are HANDING THE KEYS TO THE PEOPLE THEY FEAR.

The Psychology of Self-Defeat

Why can't they see it?

Fear blindness: Terror about AI makes them unable to think clearly about second-order effects.

Status quo bias: They trust existing institutions (governments, regulators) despite all evidence.

Main character syndrome: They believe their intervention will be different, their regulations won't be captured.

Moral licensing: Having identified as the "good guys," they can't recognize when their actions cause harm.

Selection for drama: The most alarmed voices get the most attention, creating a feedback loop of escalating panic.

The Authoritarian Playbook

Authoritarians are watching the doomers and taking notes.
